I won’t be home for Christmas

My favorite Christmas song, by Blink 182 (I’m such a loser, I still listen to all of that pop punk crap!) Go look at it, because I am far too lazy to get they lyrics. They make me laugh every time. It’s about hitting carolers with a baseball bat. It is sublime.

Our first Christmas morning as a happy family. Last year I wasn’t speaking to any of my family and I had just moved in with Austin and his dad Alan. Ugh that was awful. Sophie was a few weeks old and only cared about when Food (me) was going to whip out my boob next. This year, shes a little over a year old and really enjoyed ripping open the presents and admiring each toy/book/drum in turn. I wrapped up some empty shirt boxes for the fun of it, but by the end of the actual toy unwrapping she was content to sit and play. She got two Sandra Boyton books from Santa (Snoozers and A Bath Book), a homemade drum rattle decorated with pooh stickers from me and Austin and a set of foam letters and numbers for the bath. Also a peppermint Joe Joe cookie in her stocking with the books. A whole one all to herself! That really made the morning for her, snacking on a delicious pepperminty cookie of goodness (If you haven’t had Trader Joe’s peppermint Joe Joe cookies, you haven’t lived. I go through a box in a few days, if I ration) while getting chocolate crumbs and smears on her books and foam letters.

I have to start cleaning my house pretty soon. It was decided last night that we would be hosting the Christmas Day get together with Austin’s mom, step dad and little two year old brother, Jesse. They’re bringing dinner, a roast with all the trimmings. The house is a disaster. I found one of my thongs under the tree this morning. I have no idea how it got there.

The meal will be supplemented with the leftovers from the midnight meal Austin and I had last night while watching A Christmas Story. I made a HUGE honey spice glazed ham, Paula Deen’s Green Bean Casserole (like crack, it is so, so, so good), and a recipe for Sweet Potato Casserole I got from NSPM (also like crack, it was so good! I ran out of eggs so I used marshmallows instead. It was a good call) and a Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Pie.

We also exchanged our gifts last night. I had made a little writing kit for Austin with an all weather notebook, various pens including a real cartooning pen and a little eraser shaped like a piece of sushi. He loved it! Austin cheated and went over our $5 limit and got me a pair of beautiful, cozy, warm Bloves. I call them bloves, but they’re those fingerless gloves that go all the way to your elbows… mmmm so toasty. Especially good for going out in the cold to smoke a cigarette. After we get our check, I’m going to go buy him a digital voice recorder with a USB to connect to the computer and built in editing software. He can record his business meetings with Insane Inc.’s co-founder, Tina. It’s there alternative comic book business. They’re currently hashing out the script and character details so the artists they have can get started. I’ll send my friends free copies, if they like when it comes out =). They’re pretty crazy and dark. Anyway, they have a lot of meetings outside with cigarettes, so it would be nice to record, upload and transcribe. It’ll fit in the little pirate pouch i got to put his nice pens and writing things in. I have no idea what my “big gift” is going to be, but I have a feeling it will involve a day spa and that makes me pretty happy!

I’m out of cream and I’m forgetful so I didn’t put the milk for the sweet potatoes back in the fridge last night. D’oh! Now I must flavor my coffee with sugar and whiskey. Mmmmm, Christmas tipsiness.

I wish you all a great one. Even the other non Christians. Jesus was born in June, so I see no reason not to celebrate the Pagan winter solstice!
